What to Wear for Spring Family Photos: Maternity Edition
If you’re struggling to figure out what to wear for spring family photos, today’s post is for you! One of the things I’ve been busy with in the off season has been adding new pieces to The Client Closet and updating the links for client style boards. Every booked SSP client gets a personalized style board for their family so that it’s easy to figure out what to wear for your spring family photos, whether you choose to borrow from The Client Closet or not! Each season, I add new season-appropriate links to my folder to choose from when I design the style boards. I’m looking forward to spring after all of our fall colors and sweaters…bring on the dreamy chiffon and floral prints for spring!
I thought today I’d share with you my top four picks for maternity dresses for family photos from some of my go-to boutiques, AND sample style boards so you can see how to style them for family photos! It’s one thing to choose a pretty dress that will look flattering in photos, but if you’ve ever pulled together outfits for five people you know it’s a whole OTHER thing to choose coordinating pieces for everyone else in the family!
#1: Floral Gauze Dress with Light Neutrals
I am just in LOVE with all of the dresses this season at Nothing Fits But! The good news is that their sizing is made to fit both during pregnancy and after, so you can bet I’m going to be buying one for myself even though I’m a solid five years post-pregnancy. I adore the delicate, subdued floral pattern against the ivory, and the graceful sleeves that can be worn on or off the shoulder. In this family session combination, I made sure the lightweight gauze of the mom’s dress was reflected in the daughter’s dress, with dad and the baby picking up the light neutral colors for an overall simple and organic feel with just a little hint of color.
These more muted warm colors photograph so well and could easily work for a fall family photo session too. I love this PinkBlush Maternity dress for its subtle ruffle details and simplicity.
#3: Cottage Dress with Cool Tones and Light Neutrals
These light, cool neutrals look so timeless. On warmer days, the little boy could wear a cream colored thermal or cotton tee instead of the sweater. Layering for the weather will be key to keep the kids comfortable: the baby’s romper could easily be worn with a long sleeve onesie underneath and tights, or without on hot spring days. And the casual off-the-shoulder look on mom’s dress is SO perfect for your dream cottage-style portraits…love it!
As you’re deciding what to wear for spring family photos in Portland, remember that it can still be cold in the evenings. You’re going to want some layers, because you just never know what the weather will bring! I love to have anyone wearing a sleeveless dress also bring a neutral, oversized chunky cardigan that they can wear off their shoulders to cover their arms, if not in the photos then at least to cozy up in between shots.
I hope this helps as you figure out what to wear for spring family photos in Portland! If you still need to book your family photos, contact me to chat about available dates, or hop through the blog to see some more family photos in Portland.
