Over the Independence Day weekend, I was lucky enough to spend some time with Ryan and Miya for their engagement session at Dawson Creek Park in Hillsboro! It was a whirlwind weekend for them as they worked family celebrations and wedding to-dos in between travel schedules, but I'm so glad we were able to make time for an engagement session! Miya also used the day of the session for her wedding hair and makeup trial, which, as you can see, was a BEAUTIFUL idea! I loved walking Dawson Creek Park with these two and chatting with Ryan, who grew up in Hillsboro, about how much that area has changed--that area was all FIELDS when my family moved up here in 1996. I'm glad some of that natural beauty has remained as they've built the area up--we walked around the pond, checked out a field, and then ended in the forest!
I'm back from a nice long holiday weekend with the family and I'm excited to share Kailey and Andrew's Champoeg State Park engagement session on the blog today! We shot this on a suuuuper hot day but we were able to hit all of the must-have locations on Kailey's list--the barn, the giant oak trees, and the field!
Whenever I get a wedding photography inquiry from a potential client, I always set up a time for us to meet each other over coffee (well, chai latte for this non-coffee drinker) and just chat! Since I spend your WHOLE wedding day by your side, it's super important that we fit well with each other! Anyway, the very first thing I like to ask couples when I meet them is about their love story! I'm a total sucker for a good how we met story, and I'm always blown away by the range of stories I hear! Literally--no two are the same!!
Well after years of asking other people about their how we met stories...I thought it was time to share how my husband and I met! I've been waiting for today to share since today is our anniversary! We've been married for 7 years today, but telling the story never gets old! Plus...writing this post meant that I got to look through all of our old photos!
That photo on the top right there? That's us on our first date!! We went salsa dancing with some of my roommates, and I'm so, so glad I made my roommate take that photo! But, backing up--we met in a BAR!! Ha! So classy. I was in grad school at UC Davis, and he had just graduated and was working in town. And, it just so happened that one of his good friends was also in my graduate program--so when a big group of us went out one night, he invited Brian to come along, and the rest is history!
He introduced himself, and as we were talking, I mentioned I wanted to go to a salsa dancing night in town. He said that he'd been looking for a salsa dancing partner and I knew I wanted him to be my dance partner!
Well, a while later, he joined my roommates and I at the salsa dancing night and THAT'S when I found out...he had very specifically said that he was looking for a salsa dancing partner...NOT that he KNEW HOW to salsa dance. Ha! I remember, as we were dancing, mentioning that they did lessons if you came to salsa night an hour before it started and he said..."Nah, I'm good" as he did his own version of definitely NOT salsa dancing. And we had the BEST time. The confidence on this man!
The rest really is history--he proposed at Santa Cruz a year and a half later, and then a year and a half after THAT, we got married at the botanical gardens in Dunsmuir, California. That's the photo on the left (thanks, Essence Photography!)--it was 1 million degrees and I wore a satin ballgown, but it was still the best day ever. Every wedding I've been to since (and there's been a few) reminds me of that day, and the feeling of excitement and a brand new season of life. Seven years and two kids later (that's the photo on the bottom right--thanks Sarah Morace Photography!), I'm amazed at how almost every single thing in our lives has changed, and also nothing has changed--I still love dancing with this man (and salsa dancing lessons still have not happened).
If you've been following the blog for a while, you know that Cooper Mountain Nature Park in Aloha is one of my very favorite places to shoot at: there's tall grass, views of the valley, and it gets the very BEST sunset light! I was so thrilled Angela and Steven chose that location for their engagement session last weekend!
Remember that day that it was spring? After our looooong rainy winter, that one Saturday where it was dry and warm before it got BLAZING HOT on Monday? Well, on that one perfect day, I met up with Lindsey and Adam in Oregon City for an engagement session on the bluffs overlooking the river. We could hear parties on the riverboats below and that was the day that I knew summer was just about here! They're getting married in August, so capturing this last little bit of their last spring before they become husband and wife was PERFECT for our spring day!
This view!! I could probably have stayed here all day.
Enjoy your photos, Lindsey and Adam! Your wedding is going to be such a fun celebration!!
This engagement session has been in the works for a while, and I'm so happy to finally share it today! I've been chatting with Lauren and Corey since the fall about their engagement session, and we went from Christmas tree farm to dog park to a forest session and my goodness I am SO GLAD we ended up where we did!! We had a bright, sunny spring day to hike some trails through the forest above Portland and it was amazing! They brought their two puppies and we all hiked around and found beautiful parts of the forest to explore and it felt totally them. I couldn't imagine this session any other way.
Let's talk adorable couples in love. Lacey & Taylor are IT. They are getting married next year, and they are working through all of the wedding planning looking like this: her, snuggled in against his chest, or holding hands and laughing, and completely enjoying each moment with each other. They're a self-proclaimed super lovey-dovey couple and spent the session cuddling and laughing with each other, which, of course, made my job SUPER easy but also made me so happy that there is love like this in the world. I have no doubt their wedding next spring will be just as love-filled and adorable as their engagement session was.
I'm so thrilled to share Emily & Ryan's fabulous fall wedding at the Green Villa Barn in Independence! First, can we talk favorite things? A barn, burlap, lace, and heirloom details are IT! Emily and Ryan put so much effort into making each detail truly meaningful to them and their families, and intertwined that with sweet little lace and burlap details that made for a BEAUTIFUL day! Congratulations again, Emily and Ryan!
Danielle and John had the sweetest wedding overlooking the water in Lake Oswego this past August. When we first met, I knew I wanted to photograph their wedding the minute John told me how they'd decided on their venue: The Foundry used to be a restaurant that he and his father went to all the time and had lots of good memories at. I loved that they chose someplace so special to them for their wedding day!
Their wedding was full of thoughtful, handmade, classic touches: from the personalized bridesmaid hangers, to the bouquets, Danielle and John put thought into every little detail of this waterfront yellow + grey wedding. It was a beautiful day!
That? Oh, that's just a BOATLOAD of people yelling "Congratulations" to Danielle and John during their portrait time. #awesome.
...aaaaand then we proceeded to party at the most adorable reception ever. That's a CANDY BAR, people. A CANDY BAR!! Danielle and John are clearly my kind of people.
The mama son dance gets me, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
We even got to sneak out of the reception for a few minutes as the sun set to grab a few photos underneath a summer moon! LOVED it! Aren't they the sweetest?? Congratulations again, Danielle and John!
